Steeples of Charleston

OK, here is a shot that has become a bit cliche' , but it's still awfully nice. WVSky sent this one, but photos of the same shot from the same angle have been featured on many Charleston area blogs and adorn the walls in the homes of some of my favorite people.

The steeples in this picture are on buildings of different denominations. From nearest to farthest they are: Sacred Heart, where they worship God and downtown real estate; St.John's , where they worship God and England; Christ Church United Methodist where they worship God and John Wesley; The Baptist Temple where they worship God (you know, the REAL God); and the State Capitol where they worship Democrats.

Nice, very very nice, and a good dig at the end.

I took that shot. We call that view the "Bill Tiernan Memorial Steeple Spot Shot", because so many people have taken the photo from "Bills location". As far as any of us know, Bill Tiernan was the first person to take a photo from the parking building and publish it in the Gazette. Bill was one of the greatest newspaper photographers this state has ever seen. He worked for the Gazette for years and now works for a paper in Virginia.

Where exactly is the "Bill Tiernan Memorial Steeple Spot"? I would like to take my own shot from there next time I am in town

It's on the top floor of the Quarrier Street municipal parking building.

What a lovely view. I live in the other Charleston - South Carolina, and we are often called the Holy City because of all the church steeples in the skyline by I am not sure we can top that view.

Bill Tiernan worked for the Daily Mail. Steve Payne and I once talked about going up on top of the parking garage and painting "Stand here for photo" on the floor... but that idea died out because really there are several spots for potential shots... as you move right and left the spires line up in different but equally pleasing ways. BTW... St John's is not in the shot. There are only 3 churches that show up... it seems like more because the Catholic church has so many spires. Here's a little article I wrote about this subject.
