Healthy Revenge for Mayor Jones

I knew this was coming. Ever since the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department investigated the facilities that Danny Jones used to prepare his barbecue ribs for a big firefighters dinner last year, it has been a foregone conclusion that the mayor would exercise his power in a punitive way. Today the Gazette reported that the honorable mayor has decided to direct his vengeance toward Board of Health president Steven Artz.

"He's getting in the way," Jones said. "We don't need his help. When his term ends, I'm going to replace him."

While I'm sure there is disagreement about the job that Dr. Artz has done leading the Health Department (he has been the leading voice in promoting smoking bans - an unpopular position), I would hope there would be some agreement that a person shouldn't be summarily whacked in such an obvious act of revenge. It seems that Mayor Jones is becoming more and more open about his proclivity to seek harsh retribution against people who offend him.

I usually agree with you, but not this time.

First, not reappointing a person to a new term in an appointed office is hardly "harsh retribution." Artz has no divine right claim to the position and the law establishes that terms expire and persons may or may not be reappointed in the discretion of the elected office holders.

Secondly, Artz has deliberately chosen to take controversial positions on multiple issues during his tenure. He is an adult and did so presumably understanding the possible, if not likely, consequences. If he felt his principles demanded he take the positions he did, that is fine and perhaps commendable, but he is not and should not immune to consequences.

Positions such as Artz's are only indirectly accountable to the citizenry through the ability of elected officials to make appointments. Mayors and county commissioners must run for office. Anyone who wants to make the decision not to reappoint Artz a campaign issue may do so. That's direct accountability.

I don't want a government where persons not directly accountable to voters can do things many voters don't like without any check on them, which is what we would have if people like this were never subject to not being reappointed.

You are absolutely correct that Dr. Artz is accountable for his actions. If Mayor Jones wants to replace him because of his work on the board that is entirely acceptable. But many believe that the real issue here is retribution for the health department's inquiry into Danny's unlicensed rib kitchen. If that is true then this is corruption in in highest form. And it seems to be true.

Dont think so. Artz has cost a lot of businesses a lot of money. He has more than a professional vendetta against (for instance) smokers... his is personal. The Dog Track is next. Other tracks have witnessed a 20% loss in revenue as reciently reported. Danny has a lot of friends in the restaurant business. Is it all about smokers? Of course not. It's about many things (probably including Rib inspections) or standing in the way of ANYTHING Jones is for, like this hotel deal. Think long term. Think properties that we have no idea who are part owners. Think the properties at the mouth of the Elk River where the old Holiday Inn sat. No... it's about two guys that are 2 of the most stubborn people you will EVER run into.. running into each other.

I agree more with your comment than your post, but I think you may be confusing symptoms with cause. I don't think Artz was fired because he made a silly grandstand move over some ribs.

I think he made a silly grandstand move over some ribs because the cook was someone with whom he had clashed and whome he knew would not support him.

With or without l'affaire du nervures, Artz would not have been reappointed.

"Narcissistic personality disorder, a condition characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance and an extreme preoccupation with one’s self. I believe we can add Danny Jones as having this condition....."

What do you expect? Danny Jones is a spoiled little rich kid punk who has made a career of meddling in gov't affairs and accomplishing nothing. You can do that when you've got Mommy's millions to throw around at will.
When will WVians quit electing the same old political hacks into office? Until they do, WV will remain a shit hole.

i dont understand how people can support their position that a smoking ban hurts anybody in the bar/restaraunt business in charleston... it is disproven every weekend when the largest niteclub in the city is voluntarily smoke free and they have more patrons than all the other establishments added together on both friday and saturday night every weekend...

but i agree with basically what everybody says about danny jones...
